“We are Acting on our lives”

Background

The wave of action, which in its core is the ‘Global Hunger Strike for Climate’ campaign, was conceived as an unprecedented initiative to synchronize a global water-fast commencing on November 1, 2023, and extending indefinitely throughout the duration of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, UAE, until December 12th. The origins of our campaign lie in the recognition that immediate and transformative action is required to address the climate crisis, protect our planet’s ecosystems and future generations.

Our guiding principles for emergency action

Our guiding principles for emergency action

1. Lowering Atmospheric CO2 to Safe Levels:

We advocate for a swift reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to bring atmospheric CO2 levels down to a safe zone of no more than 300 parts per million (ppm) from the current number of 421 ppm. This target is crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and safeguarding the future of our planet to safeguard the natural world and humanity from collapse.

We are calling governments to stop misleading the public about “limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees celsius”. These targets are not a safe zone for life on earth.

2. Implementing a Carbon Price Reflecting True Costs:

In order to drive substantial change and incentivize carbon reduction efforts, we call upon the global community to establish a carbon price that accurately reflects the true costs associated with carbon emissions. Our demand is for a price of $1,000 per tonne of carbon, which would serve as a powerful economic lever to drive sustainable practices and transition towards a low-carbon future

 3. Carbon Removal and Negative Emissions:

To achieve the aforementioned target, we recognize the need to remove at least 1 trillion tonnes of CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere. This ambitious goal necessitates the deployment of proven innovative carbon removal technologies and large-scale negative emissions initiatives aligned with climate justice principles.

By uniting under a common goal and collective action, we have an opportunity to create a powerful force for change that captures the attention of policymakers, business leaders, and communities worldwide. Together, we can influence policy decisions, inspire public engagement, and catalyze a transformative shift towards a sustainable and resilient future.
